In design, simplicity is best. Many of my rooms look traditional because of the antiques and the symmetry but I'm really a closet modernist. Less is definitely more. Most important are the fine details, classic lines, timeless pieces...elegance that is unpretentious. When you're building a room, you're building character, and character is the strength and wisdom of a home.
The most important aspect of any room is a space that is uncluttered and cozy. When it comes to accessories choose pieces there are light and simple and help to enhance the clean aesthetic. Understanding scale ~ from the size of a room to the size of the furniture ~ is a helpful way to organize a room. Big and small spaces both have specific characteristics that play out in the furniture plan.
Details are what the eye fastens on and remembers. Wall finishes and hardware, help accessorize a room and tie a look together. I strive to establish a consistent tone from the very beginning, making sure that each successive decision agrees with the previous. Details are the equivalent of jewelry. The perfect hardware ~doorknobs, hinges, locks ~ is like silver at the dinner table: it adds a tangible elegance to a room.
